We get a lot of questions on the characteristics and differences between the still in our lineup. The first thing we need to say is that they all function relatively the same. Each of our still kits comes with 100% copper parts. The're all hybrid stills consisting of a copper pot, a column still head, and an inline condenser. However, the sizes and prices are of course different. Here's a breakdown of our still line-up.

Craft distilling is exploding in the United States right now. Walk into just about any one of these new distilleries and you'll see stills very similar to the ones we offer (ours are just a lot smaller and less complicated). Almost all of these distilleries are utilizing copper pots, a re-configurable column, and inline condensers. Why? This design keeps the best of old school tradition and new school advancements in distillation technology.
Using 100% copper improves the taste and smell of whiskey by removing sulfur during the distillation process. Using a versatile column (one that can be run empty, or packed with baffles) allows the still to be fine-tuned to match the spirit being produced. For example, if a full bodied whiskey is being made, running the still like a pot still (with the column empty) will be desirable. If the still is being used for a vodka run, column baffles would be installed. Clawhammer Supply's small scale pilot stills offer this functionality. Our columns can be left empty, in which case our stills function just like traditional pot stills. They can also be packed with copper scrubbers, creating a natural reflux action and increasing the proof of the final product.
